DADs Sports Dinner with Norman Hunter ex Leeds United & England
The cartoon illustration of Leeds United hardman Norman 'bite yer legs' Hunter was produced for the DADs sports dinner menu cover by Tony Broomfield. The 'bite yer legs' reference was given to Norman Hunter because of his fierce reputation for renowned hard physical tackling during the games. The DADs logo has been changed on the illustration with a 'dad' wearing cricket pads, the tall dad states "What are you wearing cricket pads for, its football" the 'chubby' dad replies "have you seen who is playing for them, Norman 'bite yer legs' Hunter", the tall dad replies "oh... I think I might play reserve for the whole game!"
The DAD's initiative had been successfully launched during the day at the Willerby Manor Hotel, Hull at the inagural DAD's conference. It had been an exciting event with Keith Hellawell the former National Drugs Co-ordinator, TV, radio and the press, over one hundred delegates including the dads and their kids appearing at the conference in their football kits ~ a very emotional moment.
Thus we were back in the early evening at the Willerby Manor Hotel, exhilarated and glad that everything went really well. There were 80 guests, not bad for our first dinner, who enjoyed themselves throughout the night, a raffle raised several hundred pounds.
Norman Hunter gave an interesting insight into the humerous and tough world of football of the 60's and 70's, reflecting on the succesful Don Revie era, when Leeds United were the best team in the land.. He invited a few questions and was asked about his famous Wembley, England v Poland mis-tackle, that in-part cost England a place in the World Cup.
The evening was a huge success, but we had to be up early in just a few hours, because the third organised event of the DAD's launch weekend, a football/school fete, schools football tournament and DAD's vs. Ex Hull City players - all organised by DAD's was about to conclude a brilliant start to the DAD's campaign - little did we know at that time, that three years later we would be creating jobs and setting up DAD's as a leading charity..
