Our keynote speaker for the DAD's second annual conference, at the Willerby Manor Hotel (Hull) was Mo Mowlam, former MP and Cabinet Office Minister. An extremely accomplished speaker, she is known for her lively and direct style. Mo Mowlam gave an englightening talk stating that the most effective means of fighting "drugs" would be to legalise the drug trade and thereby dry up a significant source of funding for criminal activities worldwide.
"From my experience of being responsible for drug policy in the previous government, I came to the conclusion that the legalisation and regulation of all drugs was the only way to reduce the harmful effects of this activity," Mo Mowlam added that she had "many reasons" for reaching that conclusion, including allocating the appropriate taxation, that could support effective drug treatment.
The delegates welcomed the global perspective that Mo Mowlam presented, this was preceeded by an emotive presentation from Paul Thomas, a father whom lost his son to drug misuse. Paul has presented his talk to hundreds of school children, and no matter how many times you hear the story, it still hits hard.
Rob Broomfield chaired the conference and presented the DAD's developments covering its first full year, to over 80 attending delagates.
