PRESS RELEASE

10th September 2007

Inspiring conference to progress Prison & Community partnerships

A one day conference organised by HMP Hull called Beyond the Walls is being held at the Octagon Centre, Walker Street, Hull on Thursday 24th October 2007.

HMP Hull Prison Governor Paul Foweather said "this is a conference that will help to shape the future of our partnership working with local community organisations, this is the first in a series of annual conferences to help reduce re offending and offer future opportunity for offenders when they are released back into their communities".

Organised by HMP Hull supported by HMP Everthorpe, The Probation Service and Dads Against Drugs, it is free to 250 delegates on a first-come basis. The Conference is aimed at those organisations and individuals who are planning to design and manage opportunities for re offenders. It will consider how community and custody partnerships can create opportunity for offenders on release to help them from re offending, a key National Management Service Strategy.

Mark Grasby, the Conference Organisational Chair said "in our first conference we have gone for a very different approach to engage our delegates, its is very focused on motivating them and we will be asking them to pledge their support for the future development of our community programme and to return next year inspired to have done someting about the pertinent issues that affect our communities every day".

The conference is offering an opportunity to hear leading experts from differing backgrounds including Hull born Michelle Dewberry who won the cult TV programme "The Apprentice", and is a leading businesswoman. Michelle will present a motivational talk and then facillitate a Q&A session for the delegates with a panel of leading prison and community experts. Michelle will reflect on her life experiences and hard work that has led to success. There will be an opportunity to meet Michelle during the day and at a book signing session.

Additionally the conference has secured a truly extraordinary individual who will talk about his life, which went from decades of hopelessness to become an inspiration and humanitarian to others. Richard McCann is a best selling author, who will embrace the delagates with powerful and emotive presentation.

Rob Broomfield from Dads Against Drugs who is on the conference organisation committee said "this is a conference that should not be missed by anyone who genuinley cares about the future of our communities, and the future of local community prisons, its a truly ground breaking conference and I am more than pleased to be involved with a group of dynamic and motivated workers from HMP Hull who are determined to make a difference".
